XOXO. Be Mine. True love.

Whenever Valentine’s Day comes around, conversation hearts somehow end up in our cart at the grocery store. This may come as a surprise because, frankly, they don’t win the award for best-tasting candy. But to me, Valentine’s Day just isn’t Valentine’s Day without them. Conversation hearts manage to say the things you’ve always wanted to say, but thought they would come out cheesy (and they do). That’s why we crafted a mini-date that will finally give you something to do with those hearts besides eat them.

Wait, What’s a Mini-Date?

All of us at Make a Date of It (i.e. my husband and I) believe that dating brings couples closer together, no matter what stage they are in. Through spending quality time together, having fun, and talking openly with one another, dating can lead to better relationships. That said, many of us do not always have the time or money for an extravagant date night out. So we have created dozens of “at home” dates and “mini-dates” to give couples ideas for how to have date night quick and on the cheap.

For those running low on time, we’d like to introduce you to one of our mini-dates. Mini-dates take around 15 minutes and can be done anywhere. That means in the morning, when you get off from work, or right before bed you can take just a few minutes to connect and have fun with your partner. The Conversation Hearts Game mini-date is perfect for those with limited time or resources this Valentine’s Day.

(Like the idea? See a list of all of our mini-dates.)

What is your heart saying?

This mini-date requires only two things: 1) conversation heart candies and 2) the custom printable game below.

For optimal fun, we recommend buying a few different brands of conversation hearts so you have plenty of sayings to choose from. Start with Spangler’s Sweethearts, previously Necco, if you can find them (due to production constraints they only released a limited supply in 2020). If not, Brach’s has a good variety of sayings, as does the European brand Love Hearts, while Sweet Tarts Hearts actually taste pretty good. Want to spice things up and add a little humor? Throw in some Risqué Valentine Hearts to make this game hilarious and bedroom appropriate.

(Risqué Valentine’s Hearts not pictured because… well, you know why)

how it works

First, divide up the candies between you so you each have a variety of sayings. Then, set a timer for three minutes. Complete the “P.S. I love You” love letter using conversation hearts of your choice, placing them on the blank hearts. Once the timer goes off, share your letters aloud.

Next, complete the “You’ll Be in My Heart” prompts. Read each prompt aloud, taking a few seconds to pick the conversation heart that fits best. Count to three and reveal your choice to your parter. Then move on to the next prompt.

This game will surely get you both laughing and in the mood for romance. Get step-by-step instructions and download the printables below!
