How long have you been waiting for your Hogwart's letter?

Chances are, a long time. If you are like me, you've been waiting fifteen years. And by now you're probably thinking that being surrounded by a bunch of 11 year olds doesn't sound that fun anymore.

But part of me still clings on to the idea that there's some sort of magical GED program.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, we created a date night that will bring you back to the magic. And, yes, you will finally get that letter you've been waiting for. Or at least a letter.

**This date idea is part eight of our series 10 Ways to Change Up Dinner and a Movie. To receive updates on our next series, follow us on social media and subscribe to our newsletter below.**

This date spins off of dinner and a movie. An owl (or a balloon that looks like one) will deliver the invitation to your date. Then, when the time comes for your magical evening together, you will put on an wizardy playlist and eat a lovely meal inspired from the book. After such a delicious meal, you will be ready to have some fun. You’ll play a Harry Potter-themed board game. Then, after the game, you’ll put on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and snack on some Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans. Just watch out for the "bogey" flavored ones.

We’ve provided more details on how to do this date step by step, and included recipes for the food, below.

Step 1: Delivery by Owl Post

Harry’s life changes the moment he receives his Hogwarts letter. Granted, it takes him a few tries to get it, but once he does, things really get kicked off. Same goes for your date. Get a balloon that looks like a flying owl, or a stuffed owl, which serves as a great keepsake or gift. Then attach an invitation to your date to the string. The invite can be written on a piece of stationary, or printed, and should include the day, time, and place for your date. We’ve linked to some items below to get you started.

Step 2: Magical Mood Music

On the night of your date, set the scene with some Harry Potter-inspired music. Nerdy fans have created a whole genre of music they have deemed “Wizard Rock.” Try out our playlist of songs, including music from the movies, while you eat dinner and play a game.

Step 3: Food from the book

Make a delicious dinner based on foods mentioned in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. We’ve come up with the recipes—all you have to do is prepare them. Start with Molly’s Corned Beef Sandwiches. (If you remember, Ron's mom packed them for him on his journey to Hogwarts.) Then, make a kind of British ice cream sundae called a Knickerbocker Glory. (To jog your memory, Dudley got finicky over his while at the zoo on his birthday.) Be sure to save room for snacks during the movie!

Molly’s Corned Beef Sandwiches

Ingredients

4 slices rye bread

1/2 lb sliced corned beef

4 slices swiss cheese

dijon mustard

russian dressing

cole slaw

dill pickles

potato chips

Instructions

Lay out bread and add dijon and russian dressing to taste. Add corned beef and cheese. Optionally toast or heat through on skillet with a little butter on each side of bread. Serve with cole slaw, pickles, and potato chips.

Knickerbocker Glory

Ingredients

strawberry ice cream

whipped cream

raspberries

pistachios

strawberry gelatin cups

lace cookies

Instructions

Layer gelatin, ice cream, berries, pistachios, and whipped cream in a dish. Garnish with lace cookies. You can vary any aspect of this recipe to suit your liking.

Step 4: Game Time

The next part of your date will be to play a game. There are a ton of Harry Potter inspired board games out there to try. We’ve selected three, each that can be played with two-players, that we think you’ll enjoy. Hogwarts Battle is a deck building card game where you team up as your favorite characters to defeat the villains using spells and magical items. Harry Potter Labyrinth requires you to alter the magical game board to find your favorite characters. And Harry Potter Trivial Pursuit tests your knowledge of the Harry Potter universe.

Step 5: Watch the movie

Cap off your night by watching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone the movie and snacking on snacks from the Wizarding World, like Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, Chocolate Frogs, and Jelly Slugs. If you have time to spare, read excerpts from the book, or take a Harry Potter quiz online.
