Ahh the spa. Even the word brings to mind all things good: luxury and relaxation, restfulness and restoration.

But when was the last time you actually went to the spa?

If you are like Matthew and I, it has been awhile. Two things tend to stand in our way: time and money. While a regular trip to the spa sounds like heaven, it is difficult to find the extra two hours to do so. Not to mention, most spas come at a hefty price tag.

So it occurred to us, why not bring the spa home?

We’ve created a home date idea incorporating all the best elements of a luxury spa at a fraction of the cost. From the comfort of your own space you can unwind from your busy lives and reconnect—all it takes is a little planning. The best part? At home, your spa is absolutely private, leaving plenty of opportunity for romance.

We’ve listed here the essential elements to having a spa date at home. Scroll to the bottom for a step-by-step guide on how to pull of this relaxing date.

aroma therapy

The best part of the spa is that it acts as an antidote to that poison we all have coursing through our veins: stress. If there’s anything we could all use less of, it is stress. In our busy and technological world, stress creeps into every aspect of our lives, including our relationships, and often we don’t take the time to do anything about it.

A simple way to de-stress on your spa date is with aroma therapy. Pleasant scents create a pleasant atmosphere, and that is exactly what you are aiming for on your spa date. There are lots of different aroma therapy tools out there—from candles to diffusers and essential oils. We’ve listed our favorites below.

Cliganic 100% Pure Organic Essential Oils - Set of 12

This is a great essential oil starter kit. These essential oils are 100% pure, non-GMO, and certified USDA organic. With 12 scents included, there are countless combinations. It even comes with a guide with recipes and instructions.

Ultrasonic Cool Mist Essential Oil Diffuser

Essential oil diffusers mix with water to diffuse sent into the air through a fine mist. This decorative one also has 7 light settings so it can act as a night light.

Essential Oil 100% Natural Scented Soy Wax Candles - Set of 3

Scented candles are an obvious way to go when it comes to aroma therapy, but not all candles are created equal. These soy candles smell and look great without any added chemicals. They also create mood lighting for your bath.

A hot bath for two

A hot bath can be both romantic and rejuvenating. The key to the perfect bath is incorporating all the right elements. We’ve made this list of hacks to send your bath from blah to ahh. Use any or all of them, then try out our favorite products below.

  • Make sure your tub is clean. Especially if you mostly take showers, your tub could use a quick wipe down. Do this beforehand or pay for it with a grimy bath.

  • Think of the little things. Start by throwing two fresh towels or bathrobes in the dryer so they are nice and warm when you get out. Then, clear away any bathroom clutter.

  • Create atmosphere. Turn your ordinary bathroom into a haven with mood lighting, candles (in a safe location), or flower petals. Then, put on our relaxing and romantic playlist (below).

  • Add a romantic surprise. If you want to go all out, pour two glasses of champagne or sparkling cider accompanied by chocolates and strawberries. To keep your dishes from falling into the tub, try using a bathtub shelf like this one.

  • Heat up the tub. Hot water from the tap instantly cools down when it hits your chilly tub. Before running the tap, try pouring a kettle full of boiling water around the surface of your tub. It will help keep the water you use to fill the tub hot.

  • Once it’s hot, keep it hot. Run the bath as hot as you can in the beginning because it cools down fast. Once running, keep the door to your bathroom shut to maintain the heat of the air in the room.

  • Spice it up. This is the fun part—add products to your bath like salts, bubble bath, or a bath bomb. Salts tend to smell nice and relieve achey, tired muscles while bath bombs add a splash of scent and color to your water. Bubble bath is an old standard that can be used in conjunction with the other two, or by itself.

What if you don’t have a bath tub?

Shower steamers are the upright’s answer to bath bombs. Pure genius.

For the select few that must contend with walk in showers, fear not. You can still have a romantic spa date experience at home. Instead of a bath, why not take a hot shower for two? Create the same atmosphere as you would with the bath, but serve the champagne and goodies in the bedroom. Then add an item or two to make your shower more special, like these shower steamers, which add a refreshing fragrance to your shower.

Beauty By Earth Organic Bath Bombs - Set of 6

These bath bombs are perfect for the bath bomb novice: organic, dye-free, and in six different scents.

Dr. Teal’s Pure Epsom Salt Foaming Bath

Pour a generous amount of this into your bath for a subtle lavender scent and foam that doesn’t disappear right away.

Bath Haven Ergonomic Bathtub Back Pillow

Sometimes it can be hard to get comfortable in the bathtub. Try using a bathtub pillow like this one for back and neck comfort while you bathe.

Sensual massages

A massage can be the perfect way to ease pent up stress. And since it is a date, after all, you can make it as sensual as you like. The only trouble is: most of us do not know how to give one or utilize the proper tools. Not anymore! Here are the tools you will need to start with.

  • Towel or sheet

  • Pillow

  • Massage oil

  • Relaxing music, candles, and other mood setters

  • Massage instructional video

  • Wireless headphones

Create the right atmosphere with aromatherapy, candles (in a safe location), and music. While you are at it, ensure that the temperature in the room is pleasantly warm, as you will both be baring some skin.

Lay the towel or sheet on your bed—this will keep the oil from damaging your bed covers.Have your partner lie down and use the pillow to support their head. For better breathing, use a face pillow like the one below. Using a generous amount of oil, massage your partner.

We’re guessing you probably didn’t go to massage therapy school, so pop in your wireless headphones and watch a video to follow along and get proper tips. We suggest this one and this one (also above), both done by professional massage therapists**.

Twist Bendable Memory Foam Pillow

Want to be able to breathe while lying face down during your massage? Try this bendable pillow, which you can adjust however you see fit. Not to mention, you can also use it as a travel pillow!

Maple Holistics Sensual Massage Oil

A good massage requires a good oil, like this all-natural lavender sensual massage oil. What’s so sensual about it? You can also use it as a lubricant.

Maple Holistics Edible Massage Oil

If you are looking for a massage oil that will get you both in the mood, this edible vanilla massage oil smells great and won’t leave a bad taste in your mouth when the massage ends and the kissing begins.
